VW spec for FI fuel line is 7mm bore, but Jim's use of 5/16" for years proves it's no problem. The reduced stretching at joints may even help it last longer now the quality isn't as good. Brake reservoir line is 8mm for the later ones anyway; you should use the VW blue covered hose for that (unless you have silicone fluid) which is more reliable than fuel hose, in my experience. Dave.
