Hope you managed to not damage the ball joint!

I've taken so few of these apart that I'm not sure, but I think I 
remember seeing the same thing. I think this is typical. Make sure 
to clean that space out well when you reinstall the parts, then put 
some grease in that space to retard future corrosion.
