[T3] [T-3] CAM GEAR SELECTION STILL A MYSTERY TO ME

I have read the Bently manual, Wilson Manual, Fisher, Hayes and Chilton's:
I have only seen the cam gear selection referenced in the Fisher and the
Bently
manual.

They say that the factory selects the gear diameter which varies in probably
in
hundreth's of an inch to match the the way the cam journal and crank journal
machine variation error. Also Fisher says that racers and special machine
shops
have piles of these and they swap the gears up until they find the right
clearance between gear teeth. My question is how do I go about this?
No one has given practical solutions . Do I purchase a pile of these
and find the right one ? After market companies do not sell gears by
tolerance , I called several and one size fits all. Or do I measure
for a very bad tight indication and reject it, otherwise accept it, or then
return
the part until I get an acceptable one?

I am thinking of buying steel straight cam and crank gears together with an
aftermarket cam. Nearly all cams that have special grinds are only made
for the flat gear configuration (of course for flat cam gear pumps) . These
are
all one size fits all.

It is a definite possiblity that mine was too tight in tolerance and this
might have aggrivated the existing wear of my junkyard cam together with
all of the other factors I have mentioned.

The gear I will buy for the cam will be steel, I am paranoid, I must have my
car
running soon , I am addicted to my car and the fast lane, my Volvo just
does not feel as cool.

I am thinking of steel gear low end torque cam and hydraulic lifters, it is
a dream
to have hydraulic lifters because I like an engine I rarely mess with until
it is broke
or I wish to make better, not fix or readjust maintenence. I know , with
these the engine will no longer sound air cooled and will no longer
give major valve train worries, tightening/loosening etc... By the way I got
swivel
adjusters.

I will see if I can get the hydraulic stuff from Mexico, off thier old new
beetle
parts shop.

Has anyone ever run hydrauliucs and or the straight steel gears on our
engines ?
I hope I have the bucks for this. I know I have to machine the case for the
lifters
and have a hydraulic acm to boot. Mexican lifters cost around 4 bucks. What
is the
difference if I use for an example , lifters from Ford, Chevy etc.. from
their big engine lines or the VW aftermarket stuff or VW Mexican , the case
still needs to be macined and they seem to have approx hieght ?
