Anyone could have specified this option for their Variant or squareback regardless of where they lived although dealers/importers often resisted allowing customers to specify options that the dealers/importers didn't fancy carrying parts for and even denied such options existed until really pressed. In 1971, a friend and I both wanted to buy new Type 3 Variants with M-Options and tried to order them through the big British VW distributor at St Johns Wood in London. The salesman and then the sales manager belittled us and denied all knowledge of such things until we went away and came back with an official VW M-Options list. They just wanted quick sales from us from their existing stock of vehicles and didn't want the trouble of special orders.
