The replacement vent window seals I was able to find have a cutaway that
allows you to install the seal without removing the rivet. Unfortunately
I found them after I had already drilled the rivets out. If you're
putting in new seals check to see if they have the cutaway and if so
avoid removing the rivets if possible. If you decide to drill the rivets
anyway just make sure you don't enlarge the mounting hole or you'll end
up with a loose pivot. I would avoid using pop rivets for this job for
the same reason. You can buy NOS VW rivets and fiber washers at Bill and
Steve's and other parts suppliers for a low price. Since these rivets
are the right diameter and length they allow the window to pivot
correctly. The washers are a must--without them the pivot will tend to
bind.
