It's not really something that you have to change all that often. I only replace mine every other year, so I spend a lot more time and money changing oil. If you want to stop changing them altogether, you can install one of the electronic points replacement units or install a CDI which will still use the old points, but the old points then last forever. If your points need to be replaced more often, it is likely that your dist cam needs to be lubricated. If the points rubbing block runs dry, it will quickly wear down.
