I've owned both and they seemed to work both ways. It is also true that VW made a kit to replace the "backwards" louvers on some cars, if the owners had problems. It may seem obvious that the backwards louvers will cool poorly, but aerodynamics is seldom simple. I suspect that there is a rather still layer of air near the surface that doesn't care which way the louvers face.
