After reading one of the previous threads concerning front fenders it made me think about something I once heard about the rear fenders: I ran into a T3 guy once at a show and we started talking and he told me about how VW changed the rear fender "louvers" to face to the "rear > " instead of the "front < ".He also said how he uses this feature to "easily" distinguish certain year(s) and to avoid them. I do not recall which year(s) he mentioned. He did say that this was something that VW did to make the car slightly more "aesthetically" pleasing. It seems probable since when you look at the "rear" louvered fenders, from the front side of the car, all that you see is a nice smooth side with from the front to the rear. Yet when you look at the "forward" louvered fenders you see straight into the wells (especially if the car has been repainted... ie.. overspray instead of black)!! It was also mentioned that this design did not last long because VW quickly realized the "rear" facing louvers did not draw in as much air as the "forward" facing ones. Also said that the new owners were complaining of their engine overheating and having premature engine failures. This was since the "rear" facing louvers caught the air as it was passing and not as it was coming in. It (the air) acted as a vacuum and would withdraw or suck out any cool air and thus starve the engine of cooling. So VW changed the design and never had the same problems again. And everyone lived happily ever after 8~) In what year(s) were the air vents (louvers) made where they faced towards the rear? I have noticed them on at least two '69 Squarebacks. Did they make them like this on any of the other models (Notch, Fastback)? Is any of this true or myth? Again, just curious. I am not saying these are facts. It just sounds probable ..........Thanks to all.... -- Alex Magro '70 Fastback AT/FI '70 Square AT/FI '92 Jetta EcoDiesel __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas.
