This would slow down, or completely prevent, the proper warmup of the engine. The thing you need to understand is that cooler is not necessarily better; your engine runs best at its design temp which is what you get with cooling air exhausted at ~65C (~170F, I think.) What the flaps do is to help the engine get up to that normal operating temp as soon as possible. > and does the thermostat ever go bad? Yes, but if you have all the right parts installed, the flaps will open if this happens.
