That is straight opposite of what the larger cam does. A smaller cam opens and
closes faster.

A larger cam opens the valves more (Lift), and keeps them open longer (Duration).
This allows more fuel and air to enter the cylinder. More fuel and more air
equals more power, up to a given point. Too much is not good either. That's why
one should find the correct cam for an engine. Get the book "How To Hotrod Your
VW Engine" By Bill Fisher (Beat you to it, Jim A.), this book explain the cams
quite well, even though many of the cams mentioned as examples there are no
longer available, there are replacements though.

How big is this engine? When I built my 1679 I was advised to not go larger than
Engle W-110 when used with my stock Solex carbs, since this was going to be a
street engine. W-120 and larger would be a bit too rough on the engine, with
uneven (or no) idle. I also installed a W-100 in a stock 1600 Bug engine, this
engine is smoother than with the stock cam.
