Try to find the cork kind.  I have about 10k miles on my gaskets, and still no leaks.

No need to drain the oil first.  But it might be easier to remove the plugs first.  But again, not absolutely necessary.

The Muir manual's instructions here are good.  Do your own valve adjustments.  Muir will help.

It will be a worthwhile investment to get your own stuff for this and do the work yourself.  Sears frequently has this on sale.  If your plugs need changing, use Bosch W8AC.  Don't bother spending the extra $$ on platinum.

10-30 will be fine.  I like to remove and look at the screen every oil change, just to look for metal chunks and bits that I should worry about.  Use new gaskets and drain plug washer when putting everything back.  Pay attention to the torque specs as outlined in the manuals!  Don't overtorque any of this.  Before your trip, you'll also want to make sure the brakes are in good shape, lube the front suspension, and check your FI hoses.  Read the manuals, then ask more questions here.
