Somthing I always do to an engine/car that hasn't been running for a while: 1. BEFORE you change the oil, inject diesel into all of the cylinders through the spark plug holes. Then MANUALLY turn the engine over at least 10 times. I then find it useful to turn the engine over (with the coil disconnected and the spark plugs still out of the case) by key a few bumps. That should really get the diesel coating all of the cylinder walls. It helps eliminate any contaminants/rust that may have occured in the cylinders. 2. CHANGE THE OIL (AGAIN If you did it earlier)!!!! Be sure to completely drain the engine for at least two hours, and aire out the cylinders. 3. Turn the engine over manually AGAIN!! You want to recoat the cylinder walls. After several hand cranks, you may want to bump the engine again a few times to make sure the cylinders are lubricated well enough. You can then replace the spark plus (hopefully with new ones) and reconnect the coil. 4. I also change out all the fuel hoses, fuel filters and air filters (if any). 5. Remove the gas tank, clean it out with deisel as well, let it dry in the sun for several hours. If the inside of the tank really appears rusty, you can throw a few small rocks (emphasize small) or marbles to facilitate the removal of those nasty contaminants from the tank. There is a coating you can then put on the inside of the tank by adding it to an empty tank and SWISHING it around. It will set with the first full tank of gas. Somebody in the email list posted such instructions sometime recently if I remember correctly. Dropping is complete different for an IRS car, so check your manual if you have a late model. Don't forget to disconnect everything before you start: throttle cable, wires, fuel lines, heater control wires, heater hoses.... > One more quick question I'd like to get some input on...this engine > hasn't run in probaly 8years! That is the only way you will have some chance of finding out what kind of work it needs before you drop it. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
