This is me, Jacob Schroeder (using my list address now) > >What you replaced was the OUTER wheel bearing; there's also an >inner one. Was the old one bad? Yeah, the old one was definately bad. When I pulled it out, several of the little cylinders in the bearing fell out because the columns that held them in were gone or severly damaged. Kind of hard to explain, but I'm sure at least a few of you will understand... > >Wheel bearing are certainly something you can do yourself, but >you have to remove the caliper so you can take the rotor all the >way off and service both bearings. Clean everything out and replace >whatever is bad. ...doesn't sound like a bad idea... >There is some chance that the wheel bearing is NOT the problem. >It may be a stuck piston in your caliper that keeps the brake on. >This requires rebuilding or replacing the caliper. I prefer to rebuild. >You can also do this yourself, but it is harder and you should get a >good manual and study it first. Replacing is easier but more >expensive and the new parts you can buy are not as good as the >originals. Funny that you mention that, although I have yet to check this, but when I first purchased this car (off a guy named Jeff Taylor, who used to listen to this list frequently... anyways) after getting it home, and rebuilding the engine, I was ready to take it on a little drive, well, I didn't get far because the first time I stepped on the brake, the front piston got stuck, and let me tell you...that was a pain to get it home, becuase it got stuck really bad, luckily it had just rained and I wasn't far from the garage, so we kind of slid it back it until we took care of that. I figured that the stuck piston was caused by the caliper being old and by the car sitting for a while, since then I've had the caliper and rotor replaced. However, could these two incidents be related? >OTOH, you can keep the old caliper and rebuild it (or I can rebuild >it) and save it for later. On your 72, the left calipers can be rebuilt >as rights and vice versa. So you could rebuild both eventually, >which is probably a good idea. I will definately consider this Well, it seems I've got a few things to think about and something to work on, I'm sure I'll be posting a few more questions to the list here in about a month when I return home to my car in sweet home Indiana, for the moment I'm here in Sunnyvale CA working, but I'll be home in august to get my hands dirty again! Thanks for the help, let me know if any more ideas come up.
