When I look up pistons in the 73 paper PL I find most of what you 
find. There are both M240 and M249, and the R engine is 
mentioned as well as recessed pistons. There is no mention of 
domed pistons or an N engine.

When I look these up in the microfilm I find only the M240 and no 
mention of N or R or domed pistons.

I think you've got it accurately figured out, but I still have a problem 
with calling anything other than a high compression engine with 
domed pistons a 1500S.


So it looks like the facts got edited out slowly over the years.
