I also found this in my parts book. It lists the standard flat top
pistons (311-107-101-AA) for engines 225340 through 1100000 with option
M249, as opposed to 311-107-101-Q recessed pistons or 341-107-101-A
domed pistons (interesting that the domed pistons get a Type 34 part
number). So that must be it: M240 is the code for recessed pistons, but
on the 1500S  engines with N serial numbers the compression was lowered
not through use of recessed pistons but rather the standard 1500N flat
top pistons, so no M240.
