When the previous owner had my 73 squareback before me. He had taken the generator brushes out to clean them, not put them back in. Someone stuck a screw driver in the ignition switch to disengage the steering wheel lock, unplugged the ignition switch and hacked it up hot wiring the car. Needless to say the car was found abandoned about 15 miles down the interstate between Montgomery and Auburn, Alabama. I guess the thieves were not smart enough to notice the generator light before driving off. I know from personal experiences it is not hard to hot wire and steal a VW. Ex: In high school I was grounded from my car and had my keys taken away, I used to hot wire our old 73 super beetle and go places when my parents were not home. I later even got another ignition switch to plug into the harness so I would not bump my paper clip and shut the car off in traffic. Those were the good ole days, lol Word to the Wise, If you have a nice VW, or any VW that you want to keep, either invest in an alarm system, or buy a CLUB for the steering wheel.
