The other thing is that some cheap tickets are for travel more or less immediately, and are essentially 'spare seats'. For my own sanity, I would need to have things organised a bit further ahead really. I'll make it if I possibly can; maybe I'll wait for the Arctic to freeze this winter and drive there! There was a programme I saw about an attempt to drive overland from London to New York, but it went horribly wrong across the Bering Straits, and they had already changed from a Ford (!) to a Russian truck, then a special tracked vehicle for the sea ice.
