This is probably normal. There is a lot of play in there until the fan 
centers it and pushes it back against the shoulder on the crank.

You might want to just add a late filler tube. This would let the 
breather mist oil drain back into the sump. Of course you would 
need some place to let the gasses flow back into the intake 
stream. I don't know if the baffling is different in the late breathers, 
but since the 68-71 breather is designed to separate vapors from oil 
and drain the latter back down into the sump, you would probably 
be better off with matching parts. Do you have the correct cup and 
washer inside the breather, too?
