I ended up filing mine also, but used a hex socket bolt and was then able to use a hex allen wrench to be able to tighten it really tight. Another shade mod of mine was the addition of a punched out lid from a film can over the shaft under the arm, to eliminate the leak through the wiper shaft seal. Fit tight, rotates with the shaft, keeps water from getting on the shaft itself. I too filed a lot of flats on wiper shafts. This seemed to cure the problem.
