Is it possible that you've got the lights confused. On early years the gen light is red, while the oil light is green. VW didn't start marking them until 69, when they made both of them red, which makes more sense. I think the oil light was always on the far right. Could you temporarily install an oil pressure gauge so you could see what your pressure actually is? How about the oil pressure control valve(s) in the case?
