You are hitting the gas tank. There is only about an 1" or so between the
end of the hoses and the side of the gas tank.

Are the screens gone out of your's? There should be a screen in each one
just under the sheet metal louvers that should keep most all debris out. The
mesh is about like window screen, and that is what I used to replace mine .
Is that how all the leaves got in there? Replacing them requires removal of
the boxes which means a lot of under dash work. The late ones like yours are
plastic and not rust prone like the earlier ones. Never been into the late
style like yours so I won't guess how they come out.
