Did I hear the Phone ring? Ahhh... I wouldnt worry about a quart in 3000 at all... thats incredibly good actually. Each of my engines seems to have its own personality as far as using oil... yea they all use more on the highway and little if any in town. I think it depends on the particular rings and pistons that are used and how they are broken in... as well as the quality of valve guides or use of stem seals. And of course the weight of oil. on the Highway I cruise 70-75MPH... and that is most of the miles I put on the cars. generally they use a quart in 600-700 miles... but even the ones that have gone through more, like in 300 miles went many a mile that way with no problems so long as the level was kept up. They also seem to use more if im pushing a headwind or pulling the boat. My 71 has been fogging the town with oil smoke when I lift off the gas on the highway since the last valve job... some 30Kmi ago... but it doesnt use much in total so I think its all going out when I decellerate on the highway... the guides check OK for side play so...??? Im not worried about it at all. So to answer your question... rings and guides, and dont worry about it. You can check the guides per the berg instructions, and should, but the motors have to be really shot or have a hole in a piston to push it out past the rear slinger, and then you see the little speckles of oil on the back of the car. If the front seal leaks it will drip a couple tablespoons or so after being parked at a rest stop... easy to see. Keith ------------------------------------------------------------------- Pitch in!
