I'm pretty sure it's an older door, you can tell by the finger depression behind the door handle. You're assuming the hole in the door was an attempt to install a lock, which it might be, but it might also just be a hole in the door as Jim had first assumed. Or maybe someone made a pathetic attempt at retrofitting a lock and got the position wrong...I've seen stranger things.
