I'm sure there's no connection at all apart from the general style of the times. That's why the Mini roof looks like a small version of a Squareback, and even the front looks somewhat similar with a fairly level hood rounding off on the front edge. It was conceived at around the same time, and if you look at other British cars of the time, they all have styling similarities. The 60s Saab had more of a Fastback look than the MGB-GT, I'd have said. I think it's just that they look so different to modern cars that the similarities make more impression than the differences.
