You MUST loosen both heat exchangers ( a knuckle busting job) so that they kinda float on their studs. Then everything will move enough so that you align it up. Hand tighten everything first, point the muffler tips in the correct general direction then tighten everything up as tight as you can get it. I had a VW mechanic tell me this one time, and It's the only process that I have had to use to get exhaust systems to work on any air cooled engine. I got my new empi manzo 4 tip header system up and was trying to make it fit and found the flanges that go to the heater exchange's did not line up correctly. I took a quick measurement and found the stock to be aprox 27.5" across and my empi to be 27" across.
