I have looked at Ebay the VW "EA 97" for sale in Antwerp, Belgium. It is not an EA97 prototype. These are usually either destroyed by VW or put on display at the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. I suspect some saleman's hype has clouded the description. This one is too nicely finished to be a prototype and it looks just like an ordinary 1970 model Brazilian 1600 4-Portas. (The 1969 model had oval headlights like a 1969 VW 411.) This particular car has beeen fitted with European-style15inch silver wheel rims which is a common thing for restorers/enthusiasts in Brazil to do. It makes their car just a little different from the usual. The standard Brazilian-style 15inch rims are shown in the picture of one of these VW 1600 4-Portas which I put in the Type 3 Scrapbook, the one with all four doors open. To say that this car "is one of the rarest Volkswagens on Planet Earth" is just hyperbole! In fact, during the 1969 model year 20,148 of these four-door Brazilian VW 1600 4-Portas came off the production line at Sao Bernardo do Campo near Sao Paulo. In the 1970 model year a total of 66,129 of these 1600 4-Portas plus the 2-door fastback 1600TLs were produced of which the 1600 4-Portas constituted about half. For 1971, the final mode year for the 1600 4-Portas, around 20,000 were made. So, around seventy thousand of these "rarest" of Volkswagens were made and you can still see many of them in the streets of Rio and Sao Paulo to day, some of them very tatty but still going! You can see pictures of them on < http://www.geocities.com/c_neto_2000/index.htm > . However, this is not to detract from the car on sale at Ebay. It looks really lovely and if I could scrape up a spare US$5,000 I would certainly put in a bid. I would love to have this car especially as it has done so few kilometres. And, being more than thirty years old, we are now permitted to register such cars with left hand drive for road use in Australia. Simon Glen Toowoomba, Australia.
