Just to mention this, my car has the inscription "VW Variant L", it has dual Solex's and
the upgraded interior.

In the catalogue from the German store "Axel Stauber" they list all the inscriptions
found on the German type3:

1500
VW 1500
Variant
VW Variant
VW Variant E
VW Variant L
VW Variant LE
VW 1600
VW 1600 E
VW 1600 L
VW 1600 LE
VW 1600 TL
VW 1600 TLE
Automatic
Volkswagen
E (on the Variant, 8/63-7/65)
S (on the Variant, 8/63-7/65)

As you can see, no "VW 1600 T" badge for the basic Fastback, it probably only used the
"VW 1600".

It is obviously the bodystyle, not wether if it was a wagon or van. The term "Variant"
is still used by VW on the Polo, Golf, Bora (Jetta) and Passat wagons, but not the
Sharan minivan.
