We see constant and continuing problems on this list becasue of over-torquing of 8mm studs. The correct torque is low, so this is easy to do. The 8mm studs are a good thing, but they are not mentioned in the type 3 manuals because they never came as stock on type 3 engines. The only torque spec in the type 3 manuals is that for 10mm studs, so you have to go to a beetle manual to find the right spec for the 8mm studs. They cannot be torqued to the same spec because the same torque produces much more pulling force on the 8mm stud, because of the different thread pitch. I can never remember what the right torque is for these, so I always refresh my memory with the Bentley manual when I need to know. These are critical nuts to torque carefully, so you really need to use a torque wrench here. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
