There is evidence that some Type 34 convertible prototypes were still being built well into 1962, maybe even later. I don't think VW/Karmann were ever very clear about their decision not to start production, because a lot of articles about the VW 1500 in the automotive press in 1963-1964 still wrote about the convertibles as if they were still to be produced. The book "Volkswagen 1600 Guide" by Bill Stone, published in 1966, mentions them as being "delayed". (this book is a great information source for the early cars, by the way, worth picking up if you see one).
