I use Snow Seal, it's a silicone based boot dressing. Wipe it on with a rag same as my leather work boots. I've also used Carnuba paste wax. Eliminates the propellant problem all together.

But isn't the propellant usually petroleum based? I have been looking for a silicone spray with no petroleum propellant. I think it might be good for things like ball joint boots and such..
