Those really aren't the versions of the FI, they are the suffixes of the VW part numbers of the brains. There were really just 3 different "generations" of type 3 D-Jetronic FI: 68-9 (A brain followed/superceeded by B), 70-1 (C brain followed/superceeded by D), and the 72-3s which all had E brains, although the Bosch numbers varied. > Great advice here. Places like West Coast Metric at least used to have the black ones, but I've never seen the grey ones for sale in the aftermarket.
