Volkswagen 1500E, Volkswagen Variant E

On the later 1600E, 1600LE, 1600TE, 1600TLE, VariantE,
VariantLE etc the "E" stands for "einspritzung" or fuel injection.
Does anyone out there know what the "E" stands for on the
'64-'65 1500E Type3s?
