Before you go to this much trouble I'd just have someone sit in the car and watch while you do the hose thing. That way they can shout at you the minute the leak is obvious. This prevents you from putting in more water than you need to. Start with the louvers in front of the windshield, or you may already have noticed drips on your shoes while driving but just didn't make the connection.
