Makeshift is fine, as long as it does the job.

Put it in gear (I recommend 3rd) so the tranny input shaft is not free 
to spin.

This is pretty typical of the input shaft hanging up in the clutch 
disk. You need to get everything parallel (up/down as well as 
left/right) and then push in. If it doesn't go then you may need to 
turn the crank slightly while the tranny input shaft stays still so the 
clutch splines can line up. If the clutch disk is not centered, this 
still won't work.

I leave it up so I can get under there to work, but the engine has to 
be in line with the tranny, which means that it will need to be 
slightly tilted forward while you do this.
