Is there any chance that when you install the gauge you're letting the inlet 
and outlet hoses drain of gas? This may let the pump lose its prime and it 
might not pump well that way. I'd try letting the pump run thru an open outlet 
hose until the hose was filled and then install the gauge.

Alternatively, you could get a Tee and put the gauge on one branch. Let the 
pump run until you get good flow and then shut off the open branch of the 
Tee with your thumb while you read the gauge.
