Here is your answer. 

You can do something called "full fielding" in the generator.
There are 2 terminals on the generator. D+ and DF. D+ is the output from the 
generator. DF is the field or control terminal.
Disconnect both wires from the generator. Connect a voltmeter Positive lead 
to the D+ terminal and the Negative lead of  the meter to ground.
Now, start the engine and let it run at a high idle speed. Momentarily, and I 
mean "Momentarily" ground the DF terminal and read the voltmeter. You should 
see at least 20 volts on the meter.

As to the gland nut, you will need to build some kind of a flywheel lock. A 
piece of angle iron with holes drilled to match the clutch bolts work. It 
should be at least 3 feet long. You will need it to put the flywheel back on 
too. That gland nut is torqued to about 256 fl lbs.
