I replaced the rear hatch seal on my 72 Squareback and had the same problem. The seal was from West Coast Metric. After some brain storming and I got a head ach, I checked the rear hatch adjustment. The Bentley has a really good procedure. The hatch was adjusted right but the hatch lock wasn't. A quick check is to push the button in slowly, the hatch should unlock but not open. If you push the button down farther the hatch should open. I think the middle position of the lock is so the hatch doesn't come open when not fully closed. After the adjustment it worked like new.
