Actually, when I finally rebuilt that '73 Type 2's 1600 motor, it was noticed that the two pushrods in the telescopic tubes had been rubbing very, very slightly against the interior wall of each tube. The rods were very marginally scored but this never gave me any trouble. However, for peace of mind and because I believe that VW have made such a magnificent engine and in such great numbers, I prefer to keep it as original as possible. So, when rebuilding the engine I used eight brand new VW factory stock pushrod tubes.
