It has to be removed. There is a special tool that is inexpensive and
available at most VW shops that makes pulling the pump housing a cinch.
However in your case you probably won't need it. Get the case halves
unbolted and lossened just a little (a couple soft taps with a rubber mallet)
and the pump housing will be loose enough to remove with ease. Don't make
the mistake of prying anything with a screwdriver! This is a big no-no when
tearing down an engine, so resist the urge if the case halves or the oil pump
doen't want to come apart right away!
Don't forget to remove the oil strainer and gaskets!
