I might give the extra sleeving a try inside the engine compartment. I know that the engine is being cooled properly- I have an oil temp guage and after about 2hrs the oil is around 150F and the cylinder head temp gets to about 250 at the highest point when the car is just sitting around. All the engine tin is in place and properly assembled- Shad and I made sure of that. I think mostly it is that the fuel system has to build up pressure in the engine for a few seconds then it starts up fine. The fuel pump is new, so I doubt the unit is defective or broken. Any other ideas? In general, however, there are other problems which need to be addressed which may actually be the root cause, and these should be found and attacked first. OTOH, most FI type 3 owners have probably never seen the extra sleeving that was originally provided over the longer fuel lines in the engine compartment. I've often wondered if these were there for their thermal insulation properties. You should make sure that your engine is being properly cooled: ALL cooling present and properly installed, cooling air intake bellows intact. Then make sure the mixture, advance, and timing are right, as well as the valve adjustment. Check that your body doesn't have rust-through in places that allow hot air to enter and join the incoming cooling air, etc, etc. Then again it could just be the little leaks. Finally you've got to understand that a certain amount of heat soak is normal and the engine should tolerate it. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
