They meant the tube inside the case that runs from the filter screen 
to the oil pump. I thought it was off the wall because that tube is 
steel and would shield most of the magnetic field from inside the 
tube. I thought their idea was to capture particles that were in the 
tube and on the way to the pump, but I don't think this would work.

It would probably work to just grab the random particles out of the 
oil in the sump, but cow magnets are very smooth and slippery and 
I would be concerned about their coming loose so now you have a 
big loose magnet AND a large hose clamp loose in there.
