All modern oils contain detergents, but their job is to keep the stuff
that is already loose in suspension until it can be filtered out. It is
another matter to try to loosen up the stuff that settled out long
ago. The only difference between the old stuff and the new stuff is
that the old stuff is in big chunks, and I suspect that Keith's right
about how bad it can be to suddenly break all of it loose at once in
an engine.

This is probably a good example of letting sleeping dogs lie. Clean
it out when you rebuild the engine.
