Same thing happened to me on my '73 square. My car had 80+k on it though, so I was saving for a rebuild. NO ONE could tell me what it was. Finally I had an retired volkswagen mechanic who told me to just "drive the hell out of it and see what happens" Three months later the noise stoped one day, the next day it was back... then when stopped at a long red light it quit again, I revved the engine then it started back, this time very loud. I let the engine idle, afraid of what might happen next then it just suddenly quit. I tried restarting it and it turned over fast and easy like it had no compression. When I tore the engine apart I saw that the cam gear only had one rivet holding it on. The factory cam gear was riveted onto the cam and had worked the rivets loose. I had saw these things loose before but never this bad. My guess is that is what happened to you. My theory is that he needs to start saving for a rebuild but just drive the hell out of it. I drove my car on and off for a year doing this. It didn't mess the case or anything else up, tell him to keep a cellular phone handy so that I he can call someone if it finally breaks. Hello all, My poor (I mean poor, like broke $) brother's squareback has a strange noise coming from inside the case that no one seems to know what it is. Not our dune buggy guru friend, nor the Old VW Master that I work with, so I leave to your collective experience... It's a 64 squareback, single port heads, dual carbs, with a 1500 or 1600 GEX (I know, I know!) rebuild of unknown age. When running, there is a slurping sound in the case, like sucking through a straw at the bottom of a glass. When you pull the oil cap off, it's loud. Someone thought it might be blow-by, but there is no noticeable power or compression loss. There is nothing in the way of the pickup tube and the breather is not clogged. Has anyone ever come across this? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check? Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
