Unlike bugs, new pans are not available for type 3s, so you will have to repair what you have. Bodywork is expensive to have done by others, and it is hard to find someone these days who knows how to fix a part. This compounds the problem of restoring a car for which replacements are NLA. Check for hidden rust in other places: at the rear of the front wheelwells and at the front of the rears, inside the wheelwells in both cases, where it isn't easy to see. I distrust any engine rebuilt by anyone other than myself, unless I happen to really know and trust the person who did the rebuild. Rebuilds are often done with the attitude of "It's only a VW, what's to know?" and displacement is usually approached with "If some is good, more is better," plus the first comment. There's lots to this that escapes most people. I continue to be astonished by the number of people who see no reason to study any manual before they start out on a rebuild. We can tell you what year these are if you can give us the VINs, or you can take them to www.vwtype3.org and find the VIN table there. I think it would be possible to put 5-bolt drums on a IRS rear subframe. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
