ScottT=> So what is it that makes a VW a Type 3? Interesting question, especially given that many people on this list wouldn't recognize my car as a Type 3 at first. There are four models named by VW as Type 3s: the Notchback, Fastback, Squareback, and Karmann Ghia 1500/1600. There are one or two derivative Brazilian models generally agreed to be Type 3s: the SP2, and certain Brasilia flavors. What do othey have in common? The primary indicators to me are the pan, engine and front-end assembly. Put a fiberglass body on these and you have a Type 3 Manx or whatever. Without one of these components it's something else with some Type 3 parts. Take a Type 3 and substitute one of these components, as in the Type 4 engine example, and I'd agree you don't really have a Type 3 anymore -- you have a *modified* Type 3, with a different set of essential characteristics. This can take you in any direction and there's no sense splitting hairs about it. An SP2 body on a Chevy-engined funny-car frame would still be an interesting topic for discussion here, though we really couldn't share much pertinent information about it. Is it a Type 3? Well, sort of. I'd be satisfied with that. Steven Ayres, Prescott AZ '66 KG1600, subtly modified ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
