Re: [T3] Steering box

=> how do you disconnect the tie rods from the steering arm

You will need a special tool if you hope to reuse the tie rod ends. The good
news is that the tool is common and not specific to VWs. Check your local
auto parts supply house.

=> no groove on the T34 side.

Take the clamp from the old steering box and use it on the new one. The
clamps are different, but the steering boxes are the same. You can't use the
more recent clamp without the correct notch, because the clamp won't ride
flat in the right position.

Incidentally, for those among us who haven't been under there and looked
closely, Herman's talking about notches in the side of the steering box
clamp that are used to set the angle of the box relative to the steering
wheel. The T34 steering is at a lower angle, so we have a different setting
from the other T3s. The notch rides on a bump on the top beam.

If you 'normal' T3 owners happen to be throwing out an old steering box,
check the clamp for the 34 notch. A T34 owner may need this part.
