Good, this means you were successful getting the door handle out.

The long number is the VW part # for the part it is molded into. The
short number is stamped onto the cylinder and is the key number.
What is that middle letter? That will tell us the age of the car within
a few years (K was 68-70, M was 71-3, I think.)

You should take the whole handle and cylinder to the locksmith so
you can verify that the key works after he makes it.

The actual model year is coded into the chassis # (VIN.) Your VIN
will look like 36X where X is the last digit of the model year. This
does not hold for the very early years, but if you post your VIN we
can explain it to you. On some late cars the VIN is on a plate
riveted to the top of the dash pad. It's always stamped onto the top
of the tunnel under the back seat and is also on a plate in the
trunk. Sometimes later cars have a silver sticker with the VIN on
the driver's side door jamb.
