It stems from the "Star Wars" movies.  To go from stock to custom is like
going from the Lightside of The Force to the Darkside of The Force.  Going
"custom" tends to be easier because you don't have to stay within the
confines of keeping the car stock.  If you go to
http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/ghost-page.htm and click on a part, you'll
see a page that has Luke Skywalker (for stock people) and Darth Vader (for
customizing people).

There is a gray zone, a place where the car isn't pure stock as it has some
'custom' changes made to it.  I would venture to say that where a purest
squawks a stocker wouldn't mind the 'upgrades'.  Such upgrades include
halogen headlights, electronic points, synthetic lubricants, Jim Adney's
electronic voltage regulator (if he ever gets around to it...Jim, I ain't
lettin' ya off the hook :), and generally other hidden upgrades.  Rebadging
the car, like putting the Aussie "TYPE3" badge on a non-Aussie vehicle, is
custom but generally not considered Darkside stuff as the car came that way
in Australia (http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/emblems_badges_trim.html).
Same goes for dealer-installed options like luggage racks and A/C.

Now do you understand?  Good.  Now, come to the Darksiiiiiiiide...
