You can read the front wheel alignment section in the Bentley and 
see where it tells you how the lower ball joints should always point 
forward and only the uppers should be adjusted. Check yours to 
see if they have been done wrong (they almost always have been!) 
If they are wrong you will need to copy those pages and take 
everything to an alignment shop where you can try to explain what 
they need to do to do it right. If you are successful, they will believe 
you and follow the instructions. If they don't seem inclined to do it 
by the manual, look elsewhere.

Even if the alignment is correct, the front tires may rub. For this 
VW made a clip to attach to the lower trailing arm to limit the 
steering travel. I have never seen one of the official VW ones, but I 
have made something myself that worked just fine. Just look at 
what hits what to stop things at full steering lock, then wrap a 
"shim" around the lower arm to make that stop happen sooner.
