[T3] Pushbutton Block and wiper troubles...

Hi all!
I've searched the archives but I still need help.  Recently I removed the
wiper assembly from my '63 Notch and before I reinstalled it the ink on my
labeled wires rubbed off!  Not remembering how to hook it up properly, I
simply tried all possible combinations of the three wires.  Several combos
made the wipers operate, but NO SPEED CONTROL!  Did I  burn out my rheostat?
I've scrutinized wiring diagrams and I think I have it hooked up correctly
now.  I've also acquired a second set of pushbuttons and rigged them up but
still no speed control.  In addition, now when the wipers are in operation I
get a dim glow from the generator light......The car is still six volt and
so is the wiper motor.  Can anyone offer any suggestions based on this info?

Now that I have a second set of pushbuttons I am tempted to drill out the
rivets to try and figure out a way to do something with the washer valve
(both sets of pushbuttons have leaky washer valves.)  Has anybody tried
this?  Should I?

Help me get this sucker back on it's wheels!!
